Google ranking blogs higher?

I noticed for the last few weeks I've been getting a lot more blog sites
come up when I Google for words.

Does anyone think Google is going anything different or are the blog
people getting smarter?

Blogs are basically free hosted websites and many free hosted websites
get a big boost in google, also some semi free ones like the free site
you may get with your isp. I want to say that it has nothing to do with
seo but that wouldn't be true. Recognizing which free hosted sites are
getting the boost is a part of seo, and it changes all the time which
sites get the boost. It's all part of the mystery and wonder of google.

Maybe bloggs are the only places that contain "genuine" content these days.
Not the stuff "engineered" by SEOs.

I think they are getting dumber because blogs are accessible to less
technology-savvy people. Blog software becomes smarter though.

running the service Blogger/BlogSpot.
http://braindumphq.blogspot.com/ doesn't appear at all. And yes, I've even
submitted the URL. Strange IMHO.
Any explenation anyone?

After the time when blogs just got everywhere, I got the impression that
google was deliberately downrating stuff from the main blog hosts to
prevent their results being swamped. Or perhaps applying some sort of
damping factor to the links between blogs, so they didn't overwhelm the
rest of the web?

Most Livejournals are next to search invisible, for example, even though
the interlinking that goes on there you might expect would make them
much more prominent than they are.

The same doesn't seem to apply to blogs that are built and hosted
independently - I built www.voip.org.uk on Wordpress and that does fine.
A non-profit project - www.oldies.org.uk - is also Wordpress driven and
independently hosted, and that is just starting to show up a week after
launch.

But both of those have links from traditional stand-alone sites, not
just other blogs.
