If you check out the Starting Point directory their http://www.stpt.com/ has a PR8 but http://stpt.com has a PR5 Now first of all, I'm wondering if anyone knows if linking to starting point and paying their $10 fee to be linked is worth it? Is a link from a PR8 page actually worth paying for? Also, how does google count a link from a PR8 page to my site if it's a directory list like Starting Point? Or is the PR all that matters? Anyone know how it affects my rankings, and by how much? Finally, will I get credit for the pr8 or pr5 ranking from google on this particular site. Thanks, Arjay |

All good questions and I can't answer any of them, but I was wondering where you saw the $10 fee. |

If you check out the Starting Point directory their http://www.stpt.com/ has a PR8 but http://stpt.com has a PR5 Now first of all, I'm wondering if anyone knows if linking to starting point and paying their $10 fee to be linked is worth it? I say NO! Don't pay! In all my days of promotion ... I have never paid any search engine or anywhere for that matter to be included in a directory of any sort. What I have done is read as much as I can on choosing just the right keywords .... what would be the best way to create meta tags, the best way to optimise for search engines and what have you. I have looked at everything I could look at on the web. From ezines to ebooks. I have searched this subject until I was blue in the face! I wish I had the money to where I could hire some top search engine optimisation company to do the work for me - but, realistically speaking - such is not the case. So, I am stuck with this dastardly chore. But, sometimes - doing this work yourself brings somewhat of a feeling of self satisfaction. Also, I do employ the works of addweb pro and submitwolf pro to aid me in my quest of search engine placement. Both software seem to do a pretty good job. My placement in the engines is not bad. Could be better I suppose ... However, I do not place all that shabby on yahoo! or google. Just be willing to put some effort into it. If you are not that willing to put some extra effort into your search engine positioning ... you will probably not fair so well. Hope this helped. Cheers! Google treats http://www.yourwebsite.com differently to http://www.youwebsite.com/ with the trailing slash If more people link to the trailing slash website than a straight .com with no slash, this could explain the difference in PR Cheers TAJ Simmons microsoft powerpoint mvp awesome - powerpoint backgrounds, free sample templates, tutorials, hints and tips etc http://www.powerpointbackgrounds.com |

Actually the page ranking on that site is only affected when typing either http://www.site.com or http://site.com regardless of the following / from what I can tell. It's wierd though...I don't see how that affects the site's rank since it's the same page. |

Maybe the same content but how can you tell it is the same file being served up? www.example.com is a sub-domain of example.com. Of course they are usually configured to point to the same resource, and in this case it seems likely, but, equally, they could point at different servers on opposite sides of the planet and serve up entirely different content. Googlebot cannot tell they are the same resource. |
