Default Google + MySpace = Nail in the Microsoft Search Coffin? - 08-08-2006 , 02:47 PM

Google + MySpace = Nail in the Microsoft Search Coffin?
Social networking and amateur porn powerhouse MySpace has inked a deal
with the world's most powerful voyeur, Google.
Google will pay about $900 million over three years and nine months for
the privilege of serving search results and advertising to MySpace's
100 million pedophiles runaways half-naked teenagers.
The G Poppa will also power search and ads for other Fox Interactive
properties, including RottenTomatoes.com and Scout.com. MySpace search
was previously powered by Yahoo.
The deal is obviously a win for Google, which is paying to keep its
competitors out and banking on the continued strength of MySpace.
Google will also benefit from watching how MySpace users navigate
through the huge network, which may help Google's own social networking
plans. Unlike Microsoft and Yahoo, Google doesn't have a robust social
networking infrastructure.
It's also interesting to note that MySpace did not contract with
Microsoft for search. MySpace's infrastructure is almost completely
MS-based. The two companies were lovey-dovey at the Mix06 conference in
Vegas earlier this year, when CEO Aber Whitcomb presented how Microsoft
helped MySpace scale. Combined with Google's 5% deal with AOL, the
MySpace agreement has got to put a hurting on Microsoft. Wonder what
happened?

Sure, MySpace is somewhat of a poster child to Microsoft (despite the recent
long outages... Californian heat wave to blame, but no backup arrangements
or datacentre redundancy). MySpace was also a partner of Microsoft. But come
to consider the fact that Microsoft paid A9 to provide results using
Live/MSN rather than Google. The use of search technology seems to have
become a source of revenue. Any large site can actually make revenue (or
receive freebies) by /choosing/ a search provider. Take /this/ story for
example...

Spolsky was once a project manager at Microsoft.

Best wishes,

Roy

In retrospect, I ought to have pointed out that this notion and existence of
/competition/ proves why it's helpful to all. Rather than pay for a search
service, MySpace was getting some generous rewards (big bang for the buck)
merely to accept a service. Some Web hosts are being showered with gifts as
well, but the issue in that domain (pun) is that Apache is a non-profit
project, so guess who can put up a show (e.g. GoDaddy and their millions of
parked domain)? Clients are besieged, owing/due to ransoms and bribery
(depends how you look at it). It poses a high entry barrier in the face of
smaller companies (startup) that are very ambitious, but rarely get the
change to develop. Ultimately, they get absorbed by giants.

*LOL*

This reminds me of a part of an interview last week. The Google recruiter
said that ideas at Google, as well as motivation, come from within rather
than from above (management). She used Google Earth as an example and I told
her it was an acquisition (Keyhole). I can't remember what she said next,
but it was rather funny.

I don't want to rave too much (it already feels strange as it is), but
Godin's publisher (that's the guy who told Google to give Joel the
appliance) recently contacted. She offered a free book (preprint) of Godin's
next publication.

*smile* I read yours regularly. The pictorial richness makes it a lot of fun.
No changes in your XML for a while. I look forward to some journeys and
tarantula photos. No news from the 'office'... but there is plenty of
spidering going on.

Cool. I am hoping that those things will start to happen soon with my site
as well. So far I only got contacted by a cleaning machine company (I
guess he just wanted a link) [1] :-)

Been to Guatemala :-) And I have a load of backlog (ha ha). Today I try to
make a planning for adding the missing entries, and finishing the half
finished ones :-)

Such an opportunity is still a rarity and, in fact, my Digg status was the
sole reason.

I guess 'xalapa sex' (or whatever that was) could make you thrive as a pimp.
*smile*

Best wishes,

Roy

That's awesome. Ages ago I was asked via via to review an outline for a
book, and was hoping to get more work like that. I got 2 books in return
(I prefered it over money) :-D. OTOH, I now and then help people with Perl
related homework in exchange of a book. Like that more.

Thanks. I try to get started tomorrow.

Or just a tour guide. To be honest we recently discovered a genuine sex
shop in Xalapa which had a nice punch line (roughly translated): A taste
of the Netherlands.

I am Dutch, and somewhat respected here because of my size (ha ha, I mean
186 cm [1], which somehow is used to estimate other things) so it was to
both of us very funny (It was also the first time I actually entered a sex
shop).

Anyway, xalapa sex is #8 and mexican sperm #5 :-D.

[1] Which regularly is a major PITA, I have to be careful not to hit my
head, and sitting in most buses is a challenge (as is standing, for the
former reason).

Yeah, you might be a little taller.:-) At least you didn't go to Japan.
Shoot I ate at a MickeyD's and my knees were hitting and rubbing the bottom
of the table. On the good side you have dark hair and when you have a beard
you would fit right in, just taller.

As long as it isn't in the tequila I don't care!:-)

A few weeks ago Esme and I were picked up by workers after a walk (we
could ride with them in the back of a pick up to the town), and one asked
Esme if I was her brother... Ok, we were both wearing rain coats, and not
much of me was visible, but siblings...
