Clicking on my Google search results goes off to the wrong page most times, usually to some other search page. Happens with broad band or dialup and in firefox and IE. Ive already reinstalled, along with browser. If I paste the URL i get the right page, but often clicking on the highlighted line in the results goes wrong. IT seems to go off to a sucession of addresses before settling for pages like "ask". Odd. Anyone any ideas whats happening? |

Virus. What anti-virus software do you have? Updated it recently? Tried a different browser, Firefox or Opera? Answer these and we'll start to get somewhere. |

Gazing into my crystal ball I observed Mike..... mikebclothing (AT) freedomnames (DOT) co.uk> writing in news:sttis3tek04f67ohj0jrugshrr3nqkdhio (AT) 4ax (DOT) com: Clicking on my Google search results goes off to the wrong page most times, usually to some other search page. Odd. Anyone any ideas whats happening? As Big Bill said, run a virus check. But, that really sounds like some kind of malware that may have mucked up your hosts file. 1. Run a complete virus check (try to run it in safe mode) 2. Run a malware check (also in safe mode) - I like Spybot Search and Destroy [www.safer-networking.org/] 3. If that does not fix the problem, you may have something nasty called Cool Web Search - download and run Hijack This, [www.spywareinfo.com/ ~merijn/downloads.html]. You might have to post the results to one of the boards who will evaluate the results and tell you what to do from there. 4. Go to [www.mlin.net/] and download and install two programs - Startup Control Panel and Startup Monitor. Open up Startup Control panel and see if there is anything starting up that doesn't look right. Install Startup Monitor to _prevent_ things from loading into memory on startup. 5. Download and install Process Explorer, a much better replacement for Task Manager [technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx]. 6. Download and install Hostsman [http://hostsman.abelhadigital.com/] which will prevent you from going to malware sites. 7. Download and install Spyware Blaster [www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html], which blocks malware sites. 8. Go to [http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm] and have a good read. Very useful information. 9. Make sure you have a good firewall as well - I like Sunbelt's [sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm]. 10. You could also go to Panda software and run their online rootkit detector. Prevention - 1. Stop using IE except for testing 2. Use Firefox with NoScript and Smart or Small Tooltip [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4171], which will give you a clue what you are about to click on. It's also very useful for detecting phishing - eg. the link says https://example.com but the tooltip will correctly tell you http://phishing.example.com . 3. Make sure your antivirus is up to date and run a system scan once a day (I usually do it at night when I'm sleeping). 4. Run a spyware sweeper regularly as well. Extra Protection - Download and install Personal Software Inspector from Secunia - will tell you what program(s) have vunerablities, and how to fix/patch them. [https://psi.secunia.com/] |
