Default How will SE feel about using the same IP address? - 04-12-2006 , 06:00 PM

Hi all. New to this post. I have a quick question. We have a Virtual
Private Server that we rent per year. We have unlimited domains that we
can create. (restricted by width) I have the option to buy an IP
address for each site or just use the same IP address for all the
sites. And all the sites are different type of sites. Do you think this
will affect search engine rankings if I just use the same IP address
for ALL the sites? Thanks in advance - Daniel

No. IP address matters - but not to SEs; for them, it stops at the URL.

Can you tell me why what the IP matters to? And so having the same IP
for a bunch of sites, they can still be indexed by Google, etc? Just so
I completely understand what your saying?

See my signature? These are some of the domains I have/maintain. They are
all on the same IP and I have not slightest problems with them being
indexed and present in first 10 for selected keywords in Google results.

IP matters because it says who and where you are; for all sorts of reasons,
including security, IP matters; some like to be fixed, some prefer not to
be - there's good reasons for both views.

None of this matters to SEs, because they ain't looking.

Everything an SE does involves URLs. So long as they stay the same, you can
change your IP daily, without any harm (though the switch itself may hurt).
SEs are disinterested in IPs; they really do not care.

Whilst I don't at all disagree with what regard search engines
give to IP addresses, they certainly recognise which sites are on
which ip address. My unrelated and non-interlinked sites, all on the
same IP address, regularly get spidered one after another, and that
cannot be coincidence...

I agree. There were rumours a while back. See, for example:

http://schestowitz.com/Weblog/archiv...block-penalty/

This is somewhat adverse to common sense however. Ultimately, such rumours
were quietly falsified.

Bear in mind that Google patented a method for looking at whois records to
know which sites belong to who. Anonymous registrations, however (formerly
..us and also GoDaddy), prevent this from becoming a reliable tool and
discriminant.

Best wishes,

Roy
