Yes, but it doesn't give any advice unfortunately, to those innocent of us who have been
strucked by this new algorithm. How should I get back into the top 10? I don't have any
idiot site. It's a site selling my software and I have hundreds of satisfied customers, which
made me *quit* my dayjob focusing on this business only. Now I haven't had *any* sales
in December just because of this.

Hi,

What are the keywords and what were your rankings last month?

I can already see where the SEO problems are.

With the term "crochet hooks" we were number one
With "crochet patterns" we were around 30 which was acceptable.

Thanks again!

Hi,

This is what I'd do to get those two SERPs on that one page.

Change your title to-

Crochet Hooks and Crochet Patterns

Change these links-

Home | Shopping-Cart| Ordering Info | Policies| Search

To image links and add keywords related to the above in the ALT text.

i.e. the home one would be alt="Crochet Hooks and Crochet Patterns"
the search one could be alt="Search for Crochet Hooks and Crochet
Patterns"

Where you have the larger font Welcome, change it to-

<h1>Crochet Hooks and Crochet Patterns</h1>

You can change the style of this to match your site through CSS.

Add the two phrases or just the individual words as many times as you
can without ruining the flow.

This-

to "Karp Styles" where personal service comes first. We offer a large
selection of patterns, books and related tools for the crocheter and
knitter. If you don't find what you are looking for, feel free to
contact us.

could be changed to something like this-

Crochet and Knitting Supplies from Karp Styles where personal service
comes first. We offer a large selection of crochet patterns, books and
related crochet and knitting tools for the crocheter and knitter. If
you don't find what you are looking for, feel free to contact us.

Do this through out the page and it will add relevance.

This menu-

Main Entrance
Mailing List
Christmas
Crochet - Patterns
Crochet - Hooks
Crochet - Kits
Crochet - Thread
Patterns to Download
Knitting - Accessories
Knitting - Patterns
Knitting - Needles
Knitting - Yarn
Miscellaneous
New Stock
Sale-Specials

Is quite good seo wise (it could be improved), but is way down the
page as a robot sees it. Quick fix for this is add it on the left or
use CSS to position it where it is now, but have the HTML at the top.

All the links to this page should have the phrase "Crochet Hooks and
Crochet Patterns" or half have "Crochet Hooks" and the other half
"Crochet Patterns" as the anchor text. If you can't make this look
right use an image that says HOME in the same font as your text and
then do an image link with the above as the alt text.

The above should help a lot. Get yourself some more links from other
sites using the above anchor text to give even more of a boost.

There is a lot of other stuff that can be done, the site is far from
optimised, so you should see improvement as you put the work in.

Great suggestions Dave... but why is it that so many sites that do
exactly what you have suggested have still plumetted??

Is that not why there is so much confusion?

I don't think traditional SEO works anymore or at least not as much
as it used to. Bad, because now the rules don't seem to be the same
for everyone. Instead, there's some filtering going on, and my guess is
that they filter based on estimating the degree of commercial content.
One way of checking if the site is commerical is to look up the URL in
the Adwords database. If it's there, then it's commercial --> move it down
in the SERPs and force it to buy Adwords to come back again. (this is
just a theory of mine though, of course I have no evidence that it's the
case).

If my guess is correct, then it's bad, because that's more or less the
same thing as saying, you're making money so you shouldn't have
exposure. That can have severe consequences for the e-commerce
business. An *awful* side effect I have noticed is that some sites that
host cracks and serials for software now have got better positions than
the company's which spent huge amounts of money, blood, sweat and
tears creating that software trying to sell it to honest people.

A search engine should IMHO not filter the content at all. They loose
trust if they do. Instead, they should have continued developing the
Adwords program with new payment plans, optional types of
advertising and so on. Forcing commercial companies to buy Adwords
to get a decent position is bound to kill Google's reputation as a trusty
and non-biased search engine.

But, as I wrote above, this is a guess, based on a little research I have
made. It sure looks like that, but of course I have no evidence at all that
so is the case.

Hi Mike,, thats has been my initial thought especially when I noticed
that google is tracking click throughs from everyone, not just those
using the ggoglebar. Im just hoping that I'm mega wrong about it.. I
have noticed commercial results showing up for various search terms
now at the very top, just like overture... just waiting to see of
anyone else is noticing it...
