Default Google duo's new jet is a Boeing 767-200 - 11-22-2005 , 01:38 AM

Have you guys seen this (already two-weeks old) announcement published in
this group? If so, I must have missed it and could not resist to let it
out.

Note a fine detail: the airliner is used (of Quantas Airways fleet
supposedly) and is a great deal for the money. No-nonsense guys, like
usual.

This one was big (highly-cited) in September:

http://www.siliconbeat.com/entries/2..._is_yours.html

Full quote (it's quite succinct):

"Every Silicon Valley tech giant has to have his jet. Google co-founders
Sergey Brin and Larry Page have settled on a Boeing 767 as their personal
jet, and it's currently down in Dallas getting interior work done, or at
least that's according to Jeff Nolan, over at SAP Ventures, who told us that
he'd bumped into a guy in the aviation industry who said as much. In April,
we reported that Chief Executive Schmidt sold his ownership interest in his
jet, which he had owned for several years and let the company use for
business trips. In February, he purchased another jet, and the Google board
agreed to reimburse him $7,000 an hour for its use."

Hey, Roy. I was hoping that, since you are interested in search engines,
you would give Google founders a benefit of a doubt about their ability to
make solid business decisions.

Think of how boring a news this would be if Larry or Sergey bought a
Gulfstream or LearJet like everyone else. Yet they "settled" for a ship
that comfortably accommodates 50 people (after remodeling is complete) but
costs 70% of a new business jet that sits 12 (and has so much less
room/amenities). Boeing 767 also has a lot of parts and trained
maintenance personnel all over the world, and to buy a bolt and have it
installed on a LearJet you'd have to pay an arm and a leg. The only
problem is: the gas mileage is going to suck compared to a smaller
business jet.

Besides, I think it slips public's mind that Sergey Brin and Larry Page
are actually two different men. Unless they are gay and married to each
other, a SINGLE jet is not going to be "PERSONAL" for two separate
families! So, it is a business jet and not an extravagant personal toy.

I honestly salute these guys for their ability to pull it off.

I was merely quoting, not criticising...

I once pointed to that article, observing the fact that Brin, Page (even
Gates) come from affluent families.

Plus, they can set up YAD (Yet Another Datacentre) on that plane, shall they
ever wish to do so. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "the server has
crashed"...

I am sure that this 767 will end up among that pile of toys, right next to
the tricycle and that red bouncy ball they hop on in Googleplex. *smile*

Me too, wish I had my own jet, any of the ones you mentioned would be
fine, secondhand even :-))

Even if the plane is a personal toy, so what, they earned the money so
it's up to them how they spend it.

Kind of sad how the less successful put the more successful down, when
they should be saying "well done, now how can I do just as well or
even better?"
