Default Google Dance 2 - 08-11-2004 , 04:00 AM

I'd carry on the previous conversation but it appears to have been hijacked
and I just find adding people to my kill list.

Anyway, anyone had many more changes to their SERPS over night? My PageRank
has remained unchanged and position is still the same though my backlinks
have increased but not to an accurate amount for PR4+ sites.

Backlinks to my blog disappeared, PageRank stayed the same (so far).

There should be about 10,000 or so but I now get 696 whereas I had 400 and
something before the update.

Are you saying you added say 100 new PR4+ backlinks, but only a small
percentage are showing with the new update?

The way backlinks are shown in Google changed recently and it's never
shown them all. Google reports 2.2 million for google.com, the true
figure will be many factors higher.

That's normal. I've got sites with 50,000+ links and the most shown is
6000.

I don't see any pattern to the number of backlinks, for example a PR7
site of mine has just over 100 backlinks and another PR7 has over 3000
and a third PR7 with about 250. Then I have a PR5 with almost 2000 and
another PR5 with 6.

All depends on the PR of the links, lower the Pr more you need to get
decent PR. Does give you an indication of the quality of the links in
terms of PR and the likely hood of a PR drop in the future.

For example a site with thousands of backlinks and say PR6 is unlikely
to loose lots of links and so is likely to stay around PR6 for a long
time. So if you were setting up a link exchange this would be a good
site since it's unlikely to loose PR.

A similar PR site with only a handful of links to it (say 10) is much
more likely to drop in PR if it looses a few links it could be a
disaster to it's PR. So this might not be as good for a link exchange
(or at least keep your eye on it's backlinks).

BTW If you added the 10,000 backlinks recently don't expect them all
to be added right away. Last update the sites with 6000 backlinks was
showing between 2,500 and 3,000 on average. So I'd expect to see more
backlinks over the next few updates.

Don't be concerned if you loose a few hundred or even 1000+ over the
coming months. I'm tracking over 100 sites and I'm seeing backlinks
fluctuating considerably on some stable sites. You might see 500
dropped one month and 700 increase the next! If I was only tracking
one site I'd probably soil myself if I saw fluctuations like these
:-))

My pages have remained pretty much the same also. PR the same,
placement the same for the most part - no backward steps, though,
which is ok with me.

A couple have fewer backlinks showing up on Google. Seems like for
each new backlink gained - 3 less showing up on the backlinks check.
Quirky, huh?

On one of the Google directory pages a site moved up 5 slots - woo
hoo! But outside of that and overall - nothing major seems to have
happened with my sites.
