Default external links and changing default site page? - sorry repost - 06-07-2006 , 02:05 PM

Sorry about the repost, I did not realize I used my home account and
don't want spam.

I can't list the customer's domain as I might be liable - please
understand.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

some questions:

1. Does a string with your http site name(not neccessarilly an anchored
link) on other websites also help Google rank? I suspect strings that
look like sites are seen as links by some robots.
2. What's the best way to see how many sites are linked to you?
site:<space>domain results in pages with the string and the word
"site". Not exactly what I think google is using or what I expected.
3. Say I change the default page on a site and then submit that new
page to google as http://www.mysite.com/long_name_here.aspx.. what is
the impact of this on rank and index if nobody is linking directly to
the longer name - though it resolves it regardless? what's the impact
if doing this results in the google index now only showing
http://www.mysite.com/long_name_here.aspx and not
http://www.mysite.com. I'm not sure, but after having done this, I
believe, when I enter just the domain in google search I get:

If the URL is valid, try visiting that web page by clicking on the
following link: sitenamehere

Thanks again and sorry about the repost or limited details. Just trying
to gain a general understanding of google SEO.

That's the site: operator which in theory tells you how many pages of
your site are indexed. Only it's broken, so it doesn't. What you
should use to see how many pages link to you is the link: operator,
only that doesn't work either.

Um, what server are you on and what configuration is it set to. Can
you type in http:/example.com and see http://www.example.com in the
address bar?
