Not only, spammers are using fake addresses from known domains. It hurts
especially when you have catch-all type mailbox.

I know !
I once had 18000 arrive in my box in just over 1.5 hours !

So my record is 18 times lower. 1000 in about 1 hour. But these were
mostly sent not to me, but with faked from address - what I got were only
mail failure reports!
Mine were from a faked from address too. And they trickled in for
weeks afterwards.

Prior to that, I was getting handful [daily] from people advertising
this site : ebroadcastcorporation . com

I heard that they use outlook express because its security sucks. They
just heist your domain name and add garble for the "sending" address
(i.e. asdf (AT) someone-elses-domain (DOT) com).

All bounce-backs are routed to a catch-all account (if one exists) for
that domain; If there isn't a catch-all account it stil happens, but
the domain awner would be much less aware of it and have much less
maintenance to deal with like deleting all the bounce-backs.

These bottomfeeders can be discouraged by limiting the number of emails
that your email server will handle in one day.

The solution is simple enough and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if
these are the same people that dabble in domain kiting.

These spams are usually advertising a specific URL, stock code, or
eventually lead to a real address or fake lawyer to which morons can
send money. The sites that they advertise should be dropped by their
host and they should be added to a black-(plague)-list and then banned
by iCann so they cannot register any more domain names; lawyers
involved should lose their right to practice law; and companies that
advertise their stock codes should be banned from the market and fined.

Fines could not only help persuade people from doing this, but also
discourage hosts from allowing it to happen. Hunters don't shoot at
road signs because if one gets caught - the fine is to pay for all of
the damaged signs in that county to get replaced.

If iCann doesn't start cracking down on this - I'll have to assume that
they are profiting from it.

Spam goes nowadays mostly via trojans running on PCs that have been taken
over because the users have no clue about security.

Hi John

Thanks for your input but IMHO I think the main spam is coming from php type
scripts and not from trojans.

It's so easy with asp & php to send emails (as example) from john @
johnbokma.com

It really needs to be addressed by the ISPs.

Regard & thanks to all.
Vance

I remember I have seen reports from some spam tracing organization that at
least 80% is sent by zombies these days, as John pointed out.

And I suppose in most cases it _is_ addressed by ISPs (it cost them money
in terms of bandwidth), thus making such approach difficult - ie you can
send some spam this way, but it won't work for long. Reasonably serious
ISP will block account used for sending spam. OTOH zombie computer can be
used for months or even years without being noticed by anyone.

See Borek's reply.

You can even do that with Outlook Express, or using telnet (been there,
done that). That's one thing that's wrong with email. However, if you do
so, you connect to an SMTP server, and that one will probably add a header
to the outgoing mail, and the spammer risks that his/her IP address ends
up in blocklists very fast.

Several ISPs do take abuse reports serious. They will disconnect the
computer (or make that the owner only can access a LAN network with
various tools to clean up the issue).

Problem is that most people filter out spam instead of reporting it. They
close their eyes, and hence ISPs discover after weeks that a box has been
sending out spam for weeks, because finally part of their IP space ends up
in a block list. That's not the way to do it, and pisses of ISPs, and they
can't do much about it.
