Default Early results from the Search Engine Reverse Engineering Project - 05-09-2004 , 10:37 PM

Some early results are in from the Search Engine Reverse Engineering
Project.

These results are from Google and Yahoo. MSN, AltaVista, and AllTheWeb
have yet to index the Search Engine Reverse Engineering Project pages.

To view the Search Engine Reverse Engineering pages yourself, visit
http://www.internet-search-engines-f...ineering.shtml

One test returned results so suprising that I would like to ask members of
this newsgroup to review my methodology. This test appears to show that
Yahoo does NOT index the keywords meta tag.

Also of interest is the note that the Google and Yahoo results are exact
duplicates of each other.

Full test results are as follows:

Do search engines index ALT tags on linked graphics?
Google: Yes
Yahoo: Yes

Do search engines index ALT tags on unlinked graphics?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

Do search engines index comments?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

Do search engines index the description meta tag?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

Do search engines index the keywords meta tag?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

Do search engines treat dashes as spaces?
Google: Yes
Yahoo: Yes

Do search engines treat forward slashes as spaces?
Google: Yes
Yahoo: Yes

Do search engines treat underscores as spaces?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

Do search engines index the title tag?
Google: Yes
Yahoo: Yes

Do search engines index title tags on links?
Google: No
Yahoo: No

From what I can tell, and found out before Yahoo does not index alt tags
even with links. I just checked again and they do not. I tried several of my
images to have positive proof. But, Google definitely does.

Yahoo seems to have my complete descriptions.

last I checked both serve the description with search results if a keyword
is in the description...AFAIK neither includes it in the algorithm

Hi,

I haven't had time to do much testing lately and the last things I did
check was only for Google. I think it's still too early to make any
long term algorithm statements about Yahoo since they will likely be
significantly tweaking their algo for sometime still.

What I say below is for google only.

Agreed.

Quote:

Agreed.

If you mean it doesn't count towards the SERPs, agreed.

Do you mean title="keywords"? If so last time I checked this the text
wasn't indexed (doesn't count towards the SERPs).

If it is the above title and not the title in the head do you have an
example of a page which shows the contents of title="keywords" count
towards the SERPs?

As above.

Why yes I do. :-)

By title tag, I mean:

<title>The title of the page.</title>

Hmm... should I not call this a "tag?"

Most definitely! I added some new ones yesterday/today and I'll continue
to add 'em as long as the ideas keep coming.

I can't figure out quite how to test <b> tags.

I am going to definitely add a test to <table title="KEYWORD">.

Bill:

That test is online at
http://www.internet-search-engines-f...keywords.shtml

Unfortunately, I am *now* hitting a different Yahoo data center than I was
last night. The result being that the Yahoo data center I am now hitting
is showing me old results, with almost none of the test pages being
indexed.

So, I have to wait. I know the Google data centers by IP, but not the
Yahoo data centers.

I generally use <strong> because <b> is depreciated.

You should find it doesn't count (didn't a couple of months back).
You'll find the same with most hidden comment type things (everyone
I've tested is ignored).
