Default Duplicate content in non framed pages - 08-08-2006 , 04:34 AM

I have read that frames makes life harder for search engines. Therefor
I have built my website without frames.
To the visitor it looks like they have a frame though. I have an area
on the left containing links to external pages. But since I avoided
frames I have copied this area with the links to every page on my site.

This is where I believe I could have a problem with SEO. I guess search
engines like Google consider this to be duplicate content, and since
some of my pages contains very little text, the duplicate content rate
is sky high.

Does anyone have a recomendation what I should do about this to NOT
have my PR penalized?

Don't put it on every page. Are people really going to be so eager to
jump ship from your site that they need to have an obvious escape
route so close to hand?

A small question would be why would you need links to external pages on
every page.

No this is not duplicate content. You can have link navigational bars at the
top, foot, left, sides, etc and this is not duplicate content. Duplicate
content usually is the actual text (copy) within the site.

If you are doing something that naturally is of benefit for your web
visitor's experience, including offering him supplementary related
external content to consider, then you have nothing to fear, especially
with regards to things as unstable, over-manipulated and meaningless as
PR.

Another thing about duplicate content is some remarks that Matt Cutt's
made. If you decide to do your site providing different languages then
you don't have to worry about a duplicate content penalty.

Other Q&A of duplicate content can be found at his video here.

Posted just in case you were curious about other issues of duplicate
content.
