Default Does font size and color in style matter for SEO? - 05-10-2004 , 06:46 AM

Hi,

I defined h1 and h2 style in .css file.
Does it make difference to define the font-size as 16px, 20px, 24px?
Different color?

Until recently, I'd have said that it makes no difference at all what you
put in the css file 'cos Google doesn't look at them it just looks at the
html file - having said that, there have been recent suggestions that Google
is now looking at CSS.

The concern that I'd have would be if H1, for example, was defined as the
same size as the rest of the copy so that large amounts of text could be
marked as a heading to gain extra weight in the algo. Whilst Google
disapproves of this, there doesn't currently seem to be a mechanism by which
the bots can spot the trick - though there is always the abuse form at
Google in case someone wanted to point it out. Same for white <h1> on a
white background, etc..

Having said that - if you are looking at 16px, 20px and 24px in contrasting
colours, you shouldn't have any problem but you won't gain any advantage
over any other <h1> - and it's a small point (no pun intended) but I
wouldn't use px, preferring % or em.

try thinking about it for a moment...how does Google read your site?...and
have you EVER heard of a bot that has eyes?

so colour and text size make no difference to the search
engines...however, please don't use px to set text sizes unless you need a
small piece of text to align precisely with an image...for those of us
with sight problems it can make the site unusable

no but some say that making something bold does increase the relevancy of
that phrase

I realize this doesnt answer your question but I want to make a quick
point about font size.

Google uses a -1 on this page:

http://www.google.com/jobs/britney.html

I believe they did that to keep themselves out of their own search
results
which tells the story on extremely small font. Dont use it.

Did you check some of the SERPs?

I only check 2 and both found that page as number 1-

Britney Spears spelling correction
26 birttney spears

Here's some more-

19 britnaey spears
britnaey spears
britnee spears

The number one traffic source is britney spears and that page is in
the top 10 or so.

So that page is doing quite well.

Color and size might matter. How else does a search engine know if you're
using hidden text or tiny test as dubious methods to improve your ranking?

Your background is white and somewhere in the page, the text is white. An
intelligent algorithym will know that you're trying to hide the text from
humans. Doesn't Google punish you for doing this?

Yes - but I've yet to see Google working that out from the CSS without its
being reported to them.

The spambot that I wrote has "eyes" that allow it to see color and
text size, so I see no innate reason why search engines cannot do
the same. Indeed, it is widely believed that they do "see" text
marked with <h1> so they certainly could "see" other attributes
such as color and text size. I am not saying that they do or
don't, just that they can.

missing the point though...it isn't size and colour that the bot is
dealing with...it's reading mark up and feeding it into an algorithm...so
unless there's a strong reason to programme the algorithm to consider that
particular mark up as especially important it's unlikely to make any
difference

given the range of options for text size and colour I can't imagine anyone
would ever do much beyond devaluing text with a colour that matches the
background or where header tags have been set to below a reasonable font
size
