Default Does Bing have enough bling? - 06-22-2009 , 05:48 AM

For years, Microsoft has been struggling to chip away at Google’s
dominance in the search engine market. And for years, they have been
largely unsuccessful, mainly because their own search engine,
Microsoft Live Search, produced unwanted and often irrelevant results.
But a few weeks ago, Microsoft released Bing, an updated version of
Live Search, in their newest attempt to knock Google off its pedestal.

I was telling my neighbor yesterday:
"Google is your friend, don't be seduced by Bing"

I'm not impressed.

1. The background thingy with the little boxes takes a while to load -
even on broadband, so I would shudder to think what it's like for someone
on dialup.
2. In the preferences, the location is defaulting to Irvine, California.
I'm actually in Glendale. Google gets that right. Most geoip lookups
put me in Los Angeles, which is close - at least it's in the right
county. Irvine is 44 miles away as the crow flies, and is in Orange
county.
3. The little preview text thingy on the side is kind of nice, if it
worked correctly. There is no indication it's there, unless you _happen_
to mouse over it, and then it, too, takes a while to load. I am assuming
the information is coming from their cache, and it must be pretty old. I
changed the phone number on my website on March 3, and it's still showing
the old number.

To test a search engine the first thing I do is test my first and last
name and see which sites it favors.

Bing does a reasonable job. I think like Google, Bing is link based.
I think Google is still better but I like the graphics on Bing are
fun, and do not under estimate the role of a nice look.

Google will remain king and Bing will help Microsoft but I still think
Google is light years ahead of everyone in terms of search engine,
except maybe the Russians with http://yandex.ru

Yandex.ru with my testing is a good as Google. But it is a Russian/
Ukrainian search engine (I kinda speak these languages). If Yandex
gets more popular in the English web via effective marketing it might
make a dent in Google.

Interesting, my hosts file won't even let me go to [http://yandex.ru],
and I'm not about to turn off my hosts manager to see what it is.
Apparently, it sets a tracking cookie, and also has a misbehaving bot.
Nope, not going to go there.

yadex.ru is the 28th largest site in the whole world. It is the
largest site in Russia. http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/RU
If your host manager blocks it then I would get dump your host
manager. Every antivirus considers it safe, you can check. Google it
if you must be so xenophobic (I do not mean to offend of course
just a friendly normal forum banter but please do not be offended).

It really does give great search results and in my opinion blow bing
out of the water and in equal to google somethings better something
not.
