Default Do Links From Postings in Groups Count Towards Link Popularity? - 08-15-2004 , 09:44 AM

Hi,

I recently set up a couple of sites and want to create some back links
in order to improve their link popularity. My question is: do links in
postings to groups such as this count towards link popularity or does
google ignore them?

In case they do count, I hope you will allow me to shamelessly add
that the sites in question are: <a
href="http://www.gameopolis.com">Gameopolis.com - Free Online
Games</a> and <a href="http://informationbest.com">InformationBest.com
- Your Best Source for Information</a>.

Thanks for your input.

From newsgroups: no

The only way they would count towards your site is if the newsgroup is
available on a website (some websites mirror usenet groups) AND that page
and postings are indexed by googlebot AND the person who designed the group
leaves the links in as actual links (compared to converting them to just
plain text or by building some kind of redirecting system)

On top of that... the way you set them up would only work under very
specific schemes and probably provide nothing for you even if that was the
case.

In a nutshell: There are so many other ways to go about getting links, this
would probably be the most unreliable and least beneficial if you even got
it to work for you in the first place

Do links in newsgroups help PR?

Posts to Usenet newsgroups are not indexed by search engines, but many
newsgroups are mirrored to the web. The links in the mirrored text may be
crawled by search engines and counted towards link popularity.

Because there is no anchor text in these converted links, and because most
mirrors have very low PR (Page Rank), these links will not help you enough
to invest serious time and effort into them.

If you are posting to a Usenet newsgroup anyway, and you are saying
something intelligent in your post, people who read your post might decide
to click your link.

Note that spamming newsgroups with your URL and requests to visit your
site will not win you any friends.
