Default dmoz listing wait time? - 01-08-2005 , 07:03 PM

2 part question:

a) what is the average wait time for a dmoz listing submission to get
included?
i have some sites that I submitted quite a while ago, but they are still not
listed.

b) should I resubmit the site(s), or would that be a bad thing?

thanks

Someone posted on alt.www.webmasters - and I've seen the same posted
to WebMasterWorld, SearchGuild, and other forums: anywhere from "a few
days up to maybe 2 years or longer ..." - then again, according to the
DMOZ editor who posted in the webmasters NG, the DMOZ edito can ignore
the queu and seek out sites on their own for inclusion.

So essentially: "your guess is as good as mine" and "luck" combined.

Resubmitting nixes out your older slot in the queu and puts you at the
bottom of the heap. You can post to the DMOZ/ODP forum to have them
check on your submission ... but most you may hear is "it's still in
the queu".

When dealing with DMOZ, it is best to think in geologic time...

I submitted one of my sites back in 1999, and it's still not there! I DID
NOT submit my other site, and it got there within roughly a year after
registering the domain name. Go figure!

Sincerely,
Dmitri

geeesh. clear as mud - thanks, guys.
I guess I will just start writing down the submission dates,
and give 'em a year or so.

I wonder if I could become a volunteer editor for the category I submit to
most often...

You could try. It makes as much sense as waiting does.

Well, this is just my opinion ...

In the past DMOZ/ODP listings were worthy of bragging about. These
days they are only good for the backlinks thought - so yes, it can
help make a difference in ranking as some categories are more mirrored
than others.

But note that many of the mirrors also accept submissions, some with
quicker addition time frame than some DMOZ editors like to state being
"reasonable", so you don't have to politely sit on your hands waiting
out the DMOZ Limbo either.

Hi Carol
Do you know of any of these mirrors also accept submissions ?
I have been waiting 8 months or more myself.

I noticed when checking my backlinks that many of the sites that
mirror DMOZ also had a separate submission link [not to DMOZ] or
stated that they didn't limit themselves to DMOZ's listing of sites.

I also noticed some "mirrors" do not carry all the DMOZ cateogires but
may only carry part of them or certain categories - or perhaps some
share the DMOZ listings in a way that doesnt' count as a backlink - I
would notice some sites showing up in the backlinks, as a DMOZ mirror,
that dont' show up in my other sites backlinks.

Will has some directories listed on the FAQ site. Also, in Google
Groups archives for this group, someone posted around 4 or so months
ago a really long listing of directories [not all were free submission
ones though]. I want to say Gateway [John] posted the list, shared on
another forum, but that may be wrong. Some of those directories are
"niche" directories or have some rules about what can be submitted for
free.

When you start scoping around in your topic area - you may notice that
a wide variety of resources starting to 'pop up' in your "niches" -
and not just directory sites either. For example, one place I
didnt' know if you submitted a site to them that they had around 5 to
7 of their own "mirror site" network. Not a lot of mirrors but they
are willing to share PR and not require a link back

Those lists will get you started and busy while waiting out your time
in the DMOZ queu.

Carol
