Default dmoz - how long to get listed? - 11-17-2004 , 01:31 AM

What's the usual length of time to get listed?

Whenever I look at the directory listings, they always look the same
as if no editors are actually doing anything.

Depends on the editor is my experience.

I got mine without even asking. As always, focus on the content for a
smooth ride on the cyberhighway.

Start writing out the number PI. When you have finished, that is how long
it takes.

I just got my two sites listed and it took a few weeks. Not sure exactly how
long, didn't really pay attention. Seems to me that it's something you have
to just submit to then not fret about; when it happens it happens.

The directory edits are not in real time. It can be several weeks before
approved sites make it into the live version.

**Always** pick a category with an editor.

If it says at the foot of the category page 'Volunteer to edit this
category' then there is no editor, and it may be some time before your site
gets considered.

What if your site doesn't fit in that "has an editor" category?

That's one of my complaints about DMOZ - I wouldn't care if it took a
couple of months for a site to be listed; but it is not really great
advice, on their side of the coin, to tell folks "submit to a category
that has an editor" or "if the category you want to submit to doesn't
have an editor - apply to be an editor"

The latter may have some people applying _just_ to get their sites
listed and so not really a great volunteer when you think about it as
they didn't volunteer just for the spirit of volunteering but to
mainly help their site get listed in the category they felt it was
best suited for. The other has people submitting their sites to
category with an editor, yes, but risking that editor rejecting it due
to the site being better suited for a different category.

Not knocking DMOZ - just that I know *I* would make a lousy volunteer
as I really don't have the time to devote to such a thing ... but I
don't think if my site is better suited for a category, that has no
editor, that I should shrug my shoulders and just look around for the
"next best thing" that happens to have an editor's name listed either.
