Default DMOZ: Do they normally ask for passwords? - 11-14-2004 , 12:32 PM

I run a site with a members area (adult cartoons) and have submitted to Dmoz
(I submitted it also a long while ago but nothing happened, so recently
submitted again

I just received an email saying my submission was looking good, but they'd
like a username/password to check the members' area. I've no objection to
this, but I'm wondering if it's normal procedure, since I don't want to just
give out a pass to anybody. The email address it's come from isn't connected
with DMoz; I presume it is from the editor of the category I submitted it
to. It's an email address linked to a legit looking domain name, not a yahoo
or hotmail or something.

Would they think it rude if I asked them to prove some way who they are? I
don't want to jeopardise my listing of course. They know which section I
submitted to, but then taht would be pretty obvious. I'm hardly going to
submit it to the gardening section

Am I getting too cynical in my old age?

Ian

Why? Is it rude of them to ask to check your members area?

Just ask if they can confirm who they are (in a nice way).

Thanks for your reply John. As it was, I decided to risk it and sent the
user/pass and, glad to say, am already listed

For anyone else with the same question, if you really wanted to be
sure you were sending the password to the dmoz editor you could do the
following:
go to the dmoz category
click on the editor name at the bottom of the page
there will then be a link to a web based form which sends an email.
Now you are sure the password went to the editor.

(PS demands to know why you are not listed - when etc are futile. You
are not supposed to send them and they will usually be ignored.)

On the other hand why worry - how would a scammer after a free
password know you had just submitted to dmoz so not too likely it
would be a scam.

That's waht I thought, and indeed after I'd posted here I had a look at the
name of the editor and realised it was the same; hence why I sent the
user/pass. I was skeptical because I thought it just possible that somebody
might be human engineering; email enough sites, one of them has likely
recently submitted to DMoz, and bearing in mind how long it takes to get
into DMoz, it might be something that would work. Unlikely but possible.

Anyway, it was legit, so no problem

Ian
