Default Disable Edit in IE? - 06-29-2003 , 05:42 PM

Is there a way to disable the edit button and the View Source option in IE?
Well, I'm pretty sure that there is, but can't figure out how. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

james

I guess you could excercise discretion and refrain from clicking the
necessary items if you don't want to view/edit yourself.

For visitors to your site, I'm afraid you will have to rely on a good
old-fashioned beating. There is stuff you can dump in your page which
pretends to hide the source. Unfortunately these techniques merely
announce: Warning - newbie alert.

There really is no reliable method to hide your source/images etc. from your
visitors. Once the page is in their browser it is cached on their
workstation and available for manipulation through their file system the
same as any other file(s).

btw: this type of query is more on-topic for news:alt.html

Anyone know?

I've just visited a site that tried to do that - 20+ options on my right
mouse button menu and the person who developed the site decided that I
couldn't use any of them because he was "protecting copyright". There's no
physical way to protect material on a web site - don't ask why I was looking
at it but the content was the addresses of three hairdressing supplies
wholesalers in the Lancing area of Sussex!

People who don't want to steal copyrighted material are offended by being
treated as though they were dishonest - we're not allowed to use our own
browser features because we might do bad things with them - and people who
do want to steal material are slowed down, literally, for a second or two.

Perhaps it's self-agrandisement - my list of hairdressing supplies
wholesalers is such a wonderful thing that people will try to steal it - or
perhaps it's embarrassment - my code is so appalling that I don't want it
seen.

Curiosity prompts me to ask - is there a legitimate reason for your wanting
to disable the right-click that I have missed?

While it is true that you cannot hide source code, you can slow down
and keep out newbies.
But why?

Not really. But if you are really desperate to hide your code, you can
use JavaScript to encrypt your source code. Even if the user turns
JavaScript off, all they will see is scrambled nonsense if they try to
View-->Source. This method, however, comes with one major drawback: the
size of your page will increase dramatically. So if size isn't an issue, I
guess it's an option for you.
Tadaaaa!(1) This thread is now officially on-topic! (at least
potentially.) How so is left as an exercise for the student.

(1) My spell checker suggested "Tabasco" for this. Just thought I'd
share.

I guess that that depends on what you consider legitimate. If you consider
that if I believe that something is true, and act on that belief rationally,
then my so acting is legitimate (albeit misguided), then yes. If you
consider that if someone acts legitimately, then that someone was acting
based on true beliefs, than maybe not.

First off, I'm in fairly competitive market, and want to take every
precaution I can to protect our customers. To that end, I'd rather hide the
source code for file includes in our asp pages, so that I don't hand a
hacker a map to sensitive information. Of course, there have got to be
work-arounds, I'm sure. Too, a bit more time will crack the nut for a
really good hacker, I guess. I just want to do EVERYTHING I can to make it
as tough as possible.

Secondly, there are some movies about certain products that we made
ourselves, and I haven't seen any others out there, and I don't want someone
to just be able to link to my movie from their own site. There will be
other movies available soon, but not yet. I don't know a reliable way to
track how folks are linking to certain files on our site, so I would rather
just hide the properties from them altogether. I could do this by hiding
the source.

Thanks for the comments, to everyone who gave legitimate ;-) comments.

James

Your asp includes are not exposed in your html source - only the result,
presuming html.

Keep your server nice and tight and all will be well in your world.
