Directories and spiders

Hello

I know that directories (dmoz, looksmart etc) have human compilers but
do they also have spiders? I was just wondering how they get their
listings - is it all through submissions from webmasters/site owners
etc?

These directories manually review sites, however, new sites home pages
are typically spidered so the search technology can find them.
