Default Deliberate search result mischief groups? - 05-09-2004 , 01:29 PM

A local talk radio host just perpetuated a rumor of a political bias
in a popular search engine. Someone told him about a common search
phrase that, for the moment, produces an incorrect and particularly
nasty top result.

We all know that some companies mess around to try to get their
products listed first in search engines. What I need is pointers to
groups or jokers that have *successfully* done it for NON-commercial
reasons: for the shock value, or to cause mischief, confusion, anger
or distrust. I'd saved information about a couple of groups that
claimed to have done so, but I'm coming up dry at the moment.
Anybody?

To see three in action, search for:

1. Waffles
2. Jew
3. Miserable failure

Have you looked up the stories behind "miserable failure", and "talentless
hack"? The participants in this newsgroup also held a competition on the word
"serps", which meant that the top 100 results in Google were almost entirely
dominated by their results. Not mischievous, but it shows what a small group of
determined webmasters can do to a word.

"weapons of mass destruction"
And - adding to the list shared already by Will and Andrew - at one
time Microsoft came up #1 for phrase "go to hell" due to anchor text
of choice at times by some folks.

Thanks. "Google bomb" is an excellent key phrase for starting
research on this issue. I appreciate the quick response, and all of
the folks who've provided examples.

I would say - how big Google screwed up - a big bullet into their own foot -
Brin and Page. To be honest - they lost me during the last 6 months because
Google is worth nothing right now - they lost it completely!
