Default Competition causing headaches on dmoz.org - 06-14-2004 , 07:08 PM

This has got me very confused, maybe some one can help me out here? I
submitted my site to dmoz.org for review on May 8 or May 9 of this
year. I have waited the one month, then asked for a site status. I
received a reply very quickly and was grateful for that, but the reply
floored me! I quote:

"You just submitted it yesterday. Please see ATTENTION - Forum
Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING"

How can this be! I never re-submitted the site, I know for a fact! I
was very proper in following the guidelines, the last thing I wanted
was to be pushed back, a listing in the directory is very important to
my business.

One theory that ran through my head: Could some or one of my
competition re-submit my site, and then continue to re-submit my site
in order to keep me out of the directory? What are the chances of this
happening, for dmoz.org, is their any way of checking this. I am
confused about which avenue to pursue at this point!!!

I was an editor at Dmoz for a while, did not like it much. Anyway, just
resubmit your site. Sometimes the submissions get deleted by human error.

I tried checking for a site record for you (I am a volunteer DMOZ editor
myself) but could see nothing under shopwhatcom.com. What site did you
submit, and where did you submit it?

(If you post with a question here, you'll usually get better answers if you
give a URL so we can see what you are talking about).

How would your competition know that you had submitted your site in the first
place? ;-)

/Martin
If they're editors they would be able to see your submission plus if
you ask for a status update in the DMOZ forum they could know.

I don't recall when I first submitted but I think my original submission
was lost and this last time was December 9 2003 and still waiting.
I'd ask for a status update now but the last status update request wasn't
quite a month ago and if you ask a day sooner then 30 days or one month
you're banned from getting an update for another month. I'm sure they're
busy people but some times the wait is a bit crazy.

Hi Victoria, now you know the reason I use the shopwhatcom.com domain,
SPAM, it was too easy for you to get my email address from deja! On to
the subject at hand >

The domain name, which was submitted, was http://www.oldride.com in
the directory placement of
http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Classif...tive/Classics/

Now here is the funniest part of the whole thing. After countless
emails and conversations with a DMOZ editor (no names mentioned!) she
found that the submission took place from an email address of
@oldride.com. How could this be I asked myself, there is only one
other person who has another @oldride.com email address!

So I approached this person, and indeed she did submit to dmoz in the
exact same category as what I submitted one month previously. At first
I was very upset and explained how hard it was to get into the
directory without following rules and how duplicate submissions only
bumped my previous submission out of place. I quickly learned however,
and bless her heart!! She had no idea and thought that she would be
helping the site.

Strangely, and this may be something for DMOZ to look into. I took a
look at the form submission she used to submit http://www.oldride.com.
The link was directly from google.com, so to her, she thought she was
submitting the site into google and not dmoz, granted the logo's and
links do say dmoz, it can be a bit deceiving and I see how she must
have been confused.

My wife and I have since agreed upon a Communication Format

Thanks for all your help folks!

Breaking news at DMOZ . . . This just in . . . Status updates
can now only be requested every 6 (six) months . . .
No word on what happens if you request a status update a day early . . .

Ever wonder why some things viewed from the outside in appear so
different then when viewed from the inside out ? But I think in
the DMOZ case it is a one way mirror and we're not allowed to
peak inside.. Oh well... stay tuned for the next news update.
