Default cloaking? - 10-13-2005 , 06:04 PM

Type this into Google:
site:webmasterworld.com

Click on some of the results.

This isn't considered a form of cloaking? Google
is obviously not getting the same page that I am getting.
That site consistently gets high rankings and I often run
across their pages.

What is giving you the idea that the forum is cloaking? I see no evidence of
it.

Somehow Google is reading the page content and I am obviously getting a different page than Google is.

I bet if you set your user agent to "Googlebot" you will get a different
page than if you set your user agent to Firefox or a regular browser. I
was under the impression that serving different content to Googlebot than
to your human visitors is cloaking.

You are not getting the page as you are not subscribed to WMW. The pages are
made with a no cache and you can not see the pages unless you login.

What you are seeing is not cloaking.

Uhm, that's cloaking in my book. I mean treating Googlebot as a subscriber.
It *is* misleading the visitor.

I would think so. A visit to the site with Googlebot as user agent would
probably confirm it.

Depends, if they cloak based on IP address and Googlebot, you can't confirm
it that way.

Then I suppose you classify all login forums cloaking then. I feel that it
isn't what Google is worried about and bans you for. Register and login it
is that simple.

As long as the stuff is freely available (ie you have to register,
but you don't have to pay) that's not the worst thing that may happen.
What I hate is Google showing results from the sites that are not
available without paid subscription.

But I agree with John - technically speaking it is cloaking.

Best,
