Default Changing Domain Name on an Existing Web Site - 08-16-2004 , 01:35 PM

What problems normal occur when changing the URL of an
existing web site?

Will redirecting solve most problems?

According to search engines, changing the URL of an existing web site
means it is a non-existing web site. The best you can do is a 301
permanent redirect. (301 is the response code given from the server
to the client). If Unix, look into .htaccess. If windows look into
the ASP Response object. It will 4-5 months to retreive your Inbound
Links.

Changing domain names should be taken very seriously.

PR and relevancy do not necessarily transfer correctly through even 301
redirects. And, if they do (optimistically) tranfer, it takes several
Google updates for the process to take place.

And... getting all of your inbound links to change to the new domain name
can be a lot of work.
