Default Browser Hijack or Something Else? - 03-06-2004 , 11:17 PM

I have several user accounts on my XP machine. Searches run under my
account run fine. But under other accounts, like my wife's, I can
load the search page (e.g. google, altavista), but when I tell it to
search, nothing happens. Same if I load from the IP address, rather
than the URL.

I have been seeking help from computercops.biz, but several efforts
have failed. I've checked lots of settings and have run various av
and diagnostics.

I am using IE 6.0.2800.1106 and believe that it and XP have current
updates.

Any idea what I am dealing with?

Thanks,
David

Use the Internet Options applet in Control Panel to set your Home Page to
about:Blank
Then eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
CWShredder is also available here:

Download HiJackThis here http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If your machine is clean, I suggest try posting here for further ideas

If you already run Spybot S&D. In the advanced mode, check "immunize". At
the bottom of page where it says "Recommended miscellaneous protections"
ONLY have a check in "Lock Hosts file read-only as protection against
hijackers". If you have a check in "Lock start page setting in IE against
current user", you may not be able to change the start page. This may be
your problem.
