Ooops
Ignore that. Read the question wrong. My mistake.

SEO is always changing. What works now, doesn't mean it will work
later, but most of the basics remain the same.

Creating some unique and valuable information content on your website, that
helps answer the needs of searchers, is by far the most important factor in
SEO. You need to be a real expert regarding your information content, but
only acceptably competent at html, image editing, use of fonts, layout,
style, SEO, spelling, ftp etc.

Regarding tutorial, there are some SEO guidelines worth reading:
http://www.google.co.uk/support/webm...y?answer=35769
http://beta.search.msn.com/docs/site....htm&FORM=WGDD

Following these guidelines will make sure that your site can be read by
search engines and will help warn you off getting involved, either
inadvertently or on purpose, with link schemes and other tricks.

Entering < seo advice > or < search engine optimisation > into any search
engine will bring up numerous similar and alternative suggestions.

Best regards, Eric.

Just how important is it to "Ensure that all tags are closed" as in
<H1>?

Closing them puts a carriage return which looks funny on the pages.

Sorry don't have time to talk about it but very suprised this has not
been mentioned

http://www.seobook.com/rf/idevaffiliate.php?id=1072

thats the best one i think updated all the time so it's fresh (you
download the book, updates etc) as seo changes.

Strip out the bit after the .com if you want thats my affilate id and I
get a small cut if you buy.

Search for seobook and you will not see a bad word said agianst it.

Oh and seek out seo gold dave he knows his stuff as well and have tried
and tested all from white to black to make sure he is up to speed.

What are you meaning in the above? That just doesn't make sense with the
pages looking funny. Closing the <h1> is important. Some tags like the <p>
tag doesn't have to be closed in HTML but has to in XHTML. XHTML requires
all tags to be closed. There are quite some differences in the 2 like XHTML
has self closing tags also.

As far as SEO goes it is important to close the <h1> as the text might not
be weighed as a H1 heading and you wouldn't get any benefit from it.

If you want your pages to validate and not [possibly] crash a browser,
then it is best to close them.

No it doesn't.
If you are talking about the space between the text of the title and
the beginning of the content, then this can be adjusted with css.

Not read any SEO books in print, so couldn't recommend one.

Closing them puts a carriage return which looks funny on the pages
with my present web page template.

Check it out at:
http://naturalhealthperspective.com

The web page title bar has a black background. Closed the title bar
has an extra blank black line which looks funny. Opened, it is only a
more natural single line.

My present WYSIWYG HTML editor leaves a lot of stuff open, like the H1
tag.

That is why I am now closing them. My old pages are closed, but there
was so much font coding on them, I suspect that the H1 tag has been
ignored on most of my web pages.

I am in the process of coverting over to CSS. I want to be sure that I
am totally happy with the web page template designs, such as what to do
about the <H1> tag for example, before I convert over all my articles.
