Default Best practices - 05-02-2004 , 02:18 AM

I was banned from Google long ago. The good thing about this is that I
have stopped designing my website in order to achieve high volume of
free traffic from Google.

Instead I have focused on providing the best possible experience to the
user or prospect, regardless of whether this would penalize me on Google
(of course it didn't matter being penalized or not since I was
permanently banned anyway).

In order to drive customers to my site, I have focused on paid
advertising. I noticed that since I could choose which URL I wanted to
show to customers (through paid advertising), I was able to perform much
better targeting than with free traffic from Google.

In a nutshell, the Google ban (http://www.datashaping.com/google.shtml)
allowed me to create a website that is optimized with regard to customer
experience, as opposed to search engine robots. This has served me very
well.

Your having been "banned"from Google for reasons other than "spamming" -
recent arguments over this term acknowledged - gives the tale an individual
slant. However, I think that your take on optimisation is at variance with
what I would regard as good practice. <sweeping statement>I suspect that
most good SEO/developers </sweeping statement> try to create sites that are
designed for as good a customer experience as possible, optimised in such a
way as to make that good customer experience apparent to the search engines.

For me, the design/development of the site is about serving the visitor as
fully as possible; the SEO bit is about making sure that the site
demonstrates the legitimate relevance of that service to the searchers
query.

Your experience pushed you down the route of paid advertising - which most
have the luxury of running alongside SEO - and for those who have sites for
which SEO is problematic it's good to know that there is life without
Google.

I'm sure Martin will be able to explain that better since he is the expert
on "Dances of Death" :-)
