Default Analysis of Florida hits BBC. They suggested add -googlegoo to search term - 12-04-2003 , 07:52 AM

Just saw BBC working lunch a UK business analysis lunctime magazine on
BBC2.

They reported on Florida in context that it was damaging businesses
who've tripped the new filter.

First example was coconut oil with some company interviewed were
reporting as sufferring. They *are* found with coconut oil uk and this
was presented to the viewer as a better way to find what you want.

second example was shelving and it was presented as new algo giving
irrelevant results and shopping sites, old algo giving shelving
manufacturers.

They then followed with a description of what google are trying to
achieve (basically castrate the SE spammers). And suffixed it with "In
the proess they have done something dreadful and got rid of legitimate
business."

Finally they had someone giving tips and one of her suggested tips to
get a better result (better was the clear implication) was to add
-waffle to the search term!

This was clearly presented in a way intended to be accessible for
users.

BBC usually copies their news output to differrent programs-channels
so guess you might see the story on BBc world/ BBC News24. Guess it
will have to be a thin day for news for it to make the main news
though.

Interesting is that this change is being reported to users and overall
in a negative light. Google might listen to that, esp if it speads to
the US networks.

That's not a good article and if it was based on the BBC2 programme,
then the reporter clearly knows nothing about Search Engines and SEO.

I agree it's not a very well written article.

The BBC program was much better. I had the impression with the program
that a normal (non-techie) user would be able to follow and would give
a try at using the -waffle trick.

Anyone see that in their logs?

Of course you could track a trend of use using my web Log Analyzer ;-)

That's hysterical -- i mean, using "buy coconut oil" as the search term
to find the article about Google's changed algorithm.

The article itself is not bad. It is short, but it mentions the
notorious "shelving" example, and althpough it leaves a lot out, it
doesn't get anything seriously wrong. I was expecting the San Jose
Mercury News to break the story, but the BBC is not a bad venue.

Cordially,

So in level of importance , how does the BBC rank in relation to the
San Jose Mercury News in the USA?

Just curious,

I notice that Google has reacted to all of this negative attention and they
are updating the Google index right now...
