Default AltaVista Discovery does not work on XP. - 07-03-2004 , 09:06 AM

Is someone familiar with AltaVista Discovery? It's a search engine, indexing
your harddisk. It works just like another search engine, but it searches
your harddisk instead of the web. It not only looks at the file names but
also into the documents (doc, xls, pdf etc...)

My problem is that I could use it on W95, W2000 (however on W2000 I could
not select which folders needed to be indexed, which was possible on W95,
but it worked (indexed the whole HD)), but I can't install it on XP.
While installing I get the message the disk is full (which is not true; I've
got several Gb. still free).

Has anyone a solution for this problem or does anybody know a similar
program?

checkout www.zylab.com

Also do a google search on

zyindex

this will reveal other products such as www.asksam.com

WordPerfect version 7 has QuickFinder which also indexes every word in the
specified documntes. It works quite well with MS Word 2000 documents and
other formats.

Possibly newer versions of Wordperfect also have the feature

Advantage of indexing is that things are quick to find.

Disadvantage is that the indexes can take up heaps of disk space and, when
they get large, can take up quite a lot of time.
