Default Alexa Ranking Question .... - 02-08-2004 , 07:46 PM

What is considered a decent Alexa Ranking ? I know how its measured, but
with a zillion sites on the internet , what would be considered a good one ?
500,000 ? 300,000 ? 200,000 ?

Obviously anything 50,000 is great , but any range that would be considered
decent ?

I watch ours as a curiosity. The numbers are kinda meaningless, I
think, without context. A percentile ranking would be more
interesting, like they do the speed ranking, but maybe to a higher
precision.

It's a far from accurate way to measure traffic since there is only a
small proportion of people using the alexa toolbar. It a lot like a
survey where you ask 1000 people at random. Really it's not random
since most people won't answer surveys and so you are only surveying
those who will take a survey and happen to be where ever the survey is
taking place.

That said, my old lingerie site averaged 30,000 odd for a few months
with average traffic around 5000 unique visitors a day. When my
traffic went up to 7000 a day in December last year the Alexa ranking
hardly changed (the daily numbers) so not too accurate.

I'd say if you can get a site consistently in the top 100,000 without
manipulating the results (browsing your site for hours a day) you are
doing OK traffic wise.

I find it a useful, but not a accurate guide to traffic for sites I
look at, but wouldn't depend on it though. For my own sites log files
tell you a lot more.

David replace SP@AM with @ to email me direct.
