answer support tickets) my sites have moved down on Google.

This leads me to believe that some cheap hosting companies may be
'penalised' by google.

No, no, NO! All questions about AffordableHost should be posted to
their Usenet support newsgroup alt.www.webmaster. The answer to your
question is that Google does not penalize cheap hosting companies. So
long as the host is up, Google should have no problems crawling it.
Besides, d'ya really think Google would pay someone to see what web
hosts charge? My sites are at page-zone.com, which is in the same price
range as AffordableHost. Just today I managed to pull off the hat trick
with Google: to my amazement I am #1 for all three single keyword search
terms I have targeted on Google. Dunno how long this will last, but I am
pleased.

What you need to do is not spend more money on a host, but instead
use it to pay a good SEO.

I can't say I ever had problems with that - needed their support twice and
they did always answer quickly. If they hadn't I would not host there!

It's unlikely.

I got the impression that it takes more time to resolve my domain at
affordablehost's machines than it takes for others. If a crawler has a very
short timeout it may consider the host down (that's nothing I *know* - I
just could imagine that).

other sites. Quite possibly some of these sites could be penalised for search
engine spamming, which makes me wonder if it's possible to be tarred by
association. Just a thought, I have no evidence.

Most likely the drop in position is due to the latest update and changes in the
ranking system. The last two updates have not been normal ones.

That's possible, but I doubt they block all the virtual hosts at an ISP
because
some of them are spamming the search engine. It does not make much sense
because most likely the spammers will the first moving to another ISP.

You may want to consider getting your own ip number.
When you virtual host, other domains are shared on your ip number, and
all it takes is one user to spam google, and get the entire ip number
deranked....causing all domains hosted on it to be deranked as well.
