Adwords makes me confused

I have around 160 keywords, which I bid on.

Only around 30-40 of them have "impressions".
Even if I type in some of the keywords, which haven't got
any impressions, on the Google search engine, then the
ad does *not* show up and neither does any competitor's
ad show up. It's empty in the ad column!!!

Why are they not showing my ad and noones else's ad
although I have typed in exactly the keyword phrase I'm
bidding on?
