Default ADVICE WTD: Getting A Site Into The Search Engines - 05-01-2004 , 11:47 AM

Hi,

My company has recently launched a new website and we want to get it listed
in the search engines and directories etc. We are UK based.

I was thinking of using a submission company, there seem to be plenty around
who charge $50-$100(or pounds) to do this for a year.

Are they all the same? Can anyone recommend best company for helping us get
listed so we can get some traffic flow started?

Thanks

M

Hi M,
Submit to the appropriate category in the DMOZ, get some inbound links(links
from other sites to yours). Make sure these sites are indexed in Google and
other SE's. Stay away from those sites that offer loads of traffic. These
sites are usually spamming sites and you don't want that. And most of them
are scams because they can't guarantee loads of quality traffic. And sit and
wait. Usually about 10 to 20 inbound links can get you indexed OK. If you
want a good ranking you will need more links and good content. Content is
the key for getting indexed well.

Generally a waste of money. You can submit your web site to the search
engines that handle over 95% of the searches in a few hours. Alas, this
alone won't bring customers to your site. You need to do something called
"search engine optimization" (seo) which involves not only submitting
your site but also structuring it so as to search-engine friendly, making
it the kind of site that people will link to, and much more.

You have two choices; learn how to do SEO yourself or hire an expert.
Even hiring an expert takes research; there are a lot of crooks and
idiots doing SEO, but there are also a lot of real experts who can
make a big difference in how much traffic your site gets.

In my view a waste of your money.

If your site is something you think readers will find genuinely useful then
apply yourself for a DMOZ listing. If you are doubtful about its
usefulness - e.g. if it is just wild advertising - fix it first by improving
the content quality - as it needs to pass a human adjudicator who has seen
plenty of free-xxx-spam type sites. If you do decide to apply, spend a day
or two thinking about the exact wording to use in your application. It may
affect your business for many years. It may take several months to be
accepted.

Speak with your trade association, chamber of commerce, local community or
town web site, etc and ask to be added their web site. Try to get your
site listed similar to as follows. Words between * * are the underlined
link itself.

Good:
*By-the-Seaside: Blackpool holiday bed and breakfast* - Listings of quality
bed and breakfasts in the Fylde area. Details and reports from
holidaymakers.
by-the-seaside.co.uk
(this example has good anchor text: seaside blackpool holiday bed
breakfast )

Bad:
*by-the-seaside.co.uk* - Listings of quality bed and breakfasts in the
Blackpool and Fylde area. Details and reports from holidaymakers.
( This example has poor anchor text )

Best regards, Eric.
