Years ago it was so that you could do your small part to make the web a
better place...

Nowadays, you become an editor so you can make sure your sites all get
listed and you crush your competition

There is no such a thing as a Google editor - since Google gets its result
without human intervention - Ok some database admin at Google have
'veto'power I assume...
but the 2 kind of editors are very different - Dmoz does not list a site
unless an editor reviews
the site ....and if an editor is your competitor he will not review it...
- My point of view goes with Augustus

I have been trying for 2 and 1/2 years to have my site (above) listed at
Dmoz but the editor
for the category belongs to the competition...

If you believe so, then file an abuse complaint. Or, ask at
http://www.resource-zone.com. However, if your are talking about the
editor I think you are talking about, that editor timed out for lack of
editing and is no longer with the ODP. If so, it is an issue of your
submission being in a long neglected queue of an area of the ODP with an
editor shortage.

Besides the points already mentioned:

It's really fun, editing in the directory.
It's a little virtual world with a fascinating inner life.

If you have a sense of structure and aesthetics, you'll feel its
beauty in the course of time.

Regards,
Michael

btw: If you're fascinated too much, your online costs will increase
noticeably. :-o

Thanks everybody for answering.

Actually the real meaning of my questions was:
"Is it useful for any career of for any job or whatever?".
I understand that it is not...
(if I am wrong, please let me know).
