Default Absolute positioning - 08-02-2003 , 01:02 PM

I'm using division tags and absolute positioning for text throughout a web
site:
* div style="position: absolute; *
Does anybody have any hard experience with using these tags?
Will Google or other search engines penalize the site or not index it highly
because of such use?
The text is certainly visible, but I was just wondering if the use of the
tags had any influence in the indexing algorithm.

On a purely stylistic note, it is often easier to place this CSS
information in an external style sheet referenced in the head of your
HTML document.

..absolute {
position:absolute;
// and whatever
}

If anything, such usage of CSS will enhance your google ranking. Often
the use of tables leads to a bloated design which shields the keyword
rich content from the googlebot. By using divs and an external
stylesheet, you cut down on much of this flab, giving your good ole
content centre stage.

I didn't know they had a limit set at 100K.

Not disputing this, but do you have a source?

I don't have the source anymore, but I can tell you from personal
experience this is true, at least for cached content.

A company I used to work for had several plain pages that were about 200K.
When you viewed the cached version, you could clearly see that the pages
had been cut off at that 100k mark, sometimes in the middle of a word.
You could also do searches within that 100k and come up with results, but
the info that was not cached showed no results.

I hope you weren't on £50 per hour when you found that!
he hee - I don't do much 'hourly rate' stuff these days. In fact I try to
avoid it. Much better to work with folk to build a decent brief that I can
quote a fixed price for. Everyone sleeps better that way - IMHO.
