Default 3 Quick Steps - 07-08-2004 , 06:31 AM

I had a call from a sales guy at 3quicksteps.com yesterday regarding paying
for a keyword for the year. They say they have over 40,000 portal sites and
will get your preferred keyword to the top of the search engines for £1,000
per year.

They seem to be a bit like kellysearch in that they are a directory and the
page that they claim to be able to get to the top of the search engines will
refresh through to your site.

Apparently they have been doing this in the US previously and just moved
into the UK but when I do a search on them in Google they only have 328
pages and only 13 in alltheweb. So I can't see how they can do what they
say they will do.

They do have a guarantee, that if having paid your grand you do not get
12,000 visitors within the year, they will keep your listing for free until
you do.

Hmmm. Not sold me on the idea. Are these companies common place?

Thats only 33 visitors a day! You can get that with a listing in dmoz. or
with a very small amount of optimisation.
and traffic like that can easily be faked.
You would do better to spend your grand on AdWords. In fact at 5p a click
you could get upto 20,000 visitors - for an unlimited number of targeted key
phrases - within a much shorter period of time. thats if my maths are still
up to scratch anyway.

They want A THOUSAND QUID to send you 33 VISITORS A DAY????

Sounds like a rip-off to me. I'd turn around and take 3 quick steps in the
opposite direction if I was in your shoes!

What sort of website are you operating? I'm getting over 300 visits a day on
mine and I haven't paid a penny to anyone yet.

Hi Phillip,

I agree entirely with you, it sounds like a very bad deal, I just wondered
if anyone had come accross them previously or companies like them.

We have a web hosting and a web design site and both get more than 300
visitors per day at present. Hopefuly with James's help we will be getting
a LOT more in the coming months.

I know, just amazed me having the conversation with the sales guy. I
pointed these things out to him but he was adament that they would get top
10 placements within Google for our keyword "hosting". If he could, I would
definately take him up on it. To be honest I would pay £1000 a month for a
top 10 placement on Google for 'hosting' ;-)

I think I will be stearing clear though as he could not show me a single
keyphrase that had a decent SERP without the words 3quicksteps in it. I
guess there are some easy targets out there and companies like this are
fleecing them. I wouldn't mind but they were selling the service on being
cheaper than Overture on PPC.

That traffic is going to be very low quality.

At 12p a visitor you'd get better quality traffic from Google Adwords
and Overture or even a few of the smaller PPC advertisers.

BTW you know that means they are only aiming for 33 visitors a day to
your site!!!!

I agree Pete.

We already use Adwords at 10p per click and do very nicely out of them. We
spend about £40 per month on them at present and make a £950 profit and to
be honest I can't see us upping the ante with them as when we tried more per
click we found that our profit margins dropped considerably, sometimes to
the point of a deficit.

Refresh? I don't like the sound of that, or any of it actually. Ask
the sales idiot to explain what he means by a portal site.

Um, there's more to life than visitors. What if they send to your
site, dedicated as it is to the joys of ball-bearing manufacture,
12000 visitors all intent on seeing, say, Kylie in her knickers? They
won't do you any good. But the firm will have fulfilled its side of
the bargain. Even if they could though, is it worth a grand?

Depressingly so.
