Default Windows XP Home Edition don't support personal webserver. - 07-21-2005 , 03:26 PM

Hi everyone. I just finished creating my personal website using DW Mx 2004.
Everything is good. I can browse them using my Mozilla Firefox browser and it's
all ready for publishing. I am using a Windows XP Home Edition ver. 2 and
don't have personal web server to upload or publish my website. As I
understand Windows XP Home Edition don't include or support any versions of
personal web server (PWS) and Internet Information Services (IIS). How should I
publish my website? What kind of server should I used? Any help would be
appreciated. Thank you.

Veronica

This is only needed if you are testing pages with server-scripting locally.

If you are just creating static pages you don't need a webserver. Just
upload your files to your hosting account and you will be good to go.

Thank you Murray. Now, I get to understand about it. But I wonder where or how
to find in the computer system about my hosting account. Did you mean the
FTTP? I wasn't aware of the hosting account during the installation. I am a
Cox digital cable subscriber. Any additional info truly be appreciated. Thank
you.

First you need to register a domain name for your site. I think
http://www.networksolutions.com should point you in the right direction. Then
you have to find a host provider (someone that will host your site for you),
just google about for one. You will most likely have to pay for this service.
Then you can use the FTP program in DW to upload your site files to the host,
thus bringing your site online. Hope this helps.

I went browsing for the company that would host my site and found most of them
having great packaged deal (free domain name, waived set up fee etc, decent
disk storage, data transfer etc....). They offer hosting plans that fits my
needs however, is it necessary for me to buy it to the host company that
supports Macromedia DW software? I have my website ready to publish through DW.
Or shall I just proceed to whichever web hosting I thought would be good for
my site? Thanks for your help.

Any webhost will support "Macromedia DW software" as you are usually only
uploading html. The host will only be an issue for such things as php, asp,
cgi, video, although I guess you do want to ensure ftp file transfer is
available
