whitespace removal

Does anyone know a trick for removing multiple whitespace instances in code
view? I know HTML isn't supposed to notice them, but sometimes it does -- (The
specific case I am looking at is one where a textbox is turned into HTML
content; all new lines are given 'break' tags in the resulting code. But there
are other strange places that this is true...) Thanks
