I happen to like plastic pink flamingos.

Thanks for the feedback! 8)

The background is still a bit overpowering for me. Also, the menu feels
funny.
With it being flush with the top, but everything else starting a ways
down,
plus the fact that it feels like it's a border element and the rest of the
page
is borderless, I don't know. I'm not making any sense except to myself.

But the menu feels funny, like it doesn't belong. Kind of like a plastic
pink
flamingo in a cemetary lawn.

I see exactly what you are saying, and I think you are right on the money.
I don't think I'm going to have luck changing that, however. What I have
done, though, is what has been already recommended by Nadia - I have faded
that background image so that the page is not quite so visually 'busy'.

Now - since the masthead image (and the montage image) both have feathered
edges, the only way I could reasonably show that with background texture was
to include the background in the image (you know?). This creates a minor
alignment problem, but that's easy to solve. With the faded tiling
background, and with the UNFADED background embedded in the pixels of those
images, it kind of draws your eye to them, and away from the other page
graphics. At least I think so. I have uploaded for you to examine....

Well, it's OK. On a second thought: I actually think that the
not-exactly-perfect visual design will add to the homey feeling that I
guess the place like to convey. If the user subconsciously interprets
the site as very professional, it's a risk that he'll lose that "this is
a family run business" feeling.

So, stop where you are "visuallywise". I think you have struck the
perfect mood.

because html stacks up everything to the top left of the window, and
cuts out the right if it's too wide for the browser window. So you could
not align anything to the right of the browser window, while you can
align anything to the left.

I see what you mean!

width:whatever;
margin:0 0 0 auto;

Thanks, Dan!

You're welcome.

As a matter of fact, throughout the years I have bumped into this on
several occasions: when "too" designed material have created a
"suspicion" in the target audience, and when the design had been re-done
to become more "amateurish" (pardon the expression), they have downright
embraced it.

All you need to add now to give the site the little extra feeling of
"hominess" is an animated gif saying "Mail us". <joke>
