Default Website Price Estimate - 11-23-2004 , 10:28 AM

Hi all A quick question. I have been offered a simple job to create a website
and maintain it monthly uploading new pictures. adding articles etc. However I
am not a fulltime web designer but I am capable of doing the task .

I wanted to know how should I go about charging for the work or if anyone can
share any experiences with web site development and long term maitnence. Also
does anyone know of any good hosting companies I am located in the California
Area thanx for any help

Figure out an hourly rate. Bill them whatever it takes to get the site up.
Then set up a retainer based on an estimated hourly rate per month.

Ie, if you estimate it will take you two hours per month to update the
images, set up a retainer where they pay you quarterly for 6 hours of work.

Or, just bill them for how ever many hours it takes you each time you update
the site.

This is a regional thing. I would recommend you call around town and
pretend to be interested in hiring someone for the exact same job. See
what
other people in your area are charging, then go based on that.
Nah...that's not what is important. What is important is how much you NEED
to make to sustain a business.

Calling around will get you ranges from $10 an hour to $150+ an hour pretty
much in any region, so that's not a very good indicator.

In principle, I agree with you. It gets complicated, though, if what
you need to sustain business costs more than anyone will pay, no?

"Close up" like proximity, or "close up" like "shut up like a
telescope"?

http://www.arvixe.com/

He's in the California Area ( I can't remember where exactly.....Santa
something), but I HIGHLY recommend him (them). Excellent prices for hosting and
customer service that you can't beat. I'm speaking from just over 1 years
experience with them and found them by accident while doing research on how to
find a good host.

Hope that helps.

Vince

Hi, I think you need to plan out carefully here, don't just get a calculator
and start pumping in numbers, get all the facts from your client, don't go
with a monthly fee, go hourly or you might want to try xxx amount of hours
per week for the sum of xxx then anything on top of that is xxx amount per
hour. You will be surprised at how much people will want you fiddling with
things and it is time consuming. For the website then you need to calculate
how long it will take you, lets say it's a static 10 page site, no worries
here but it depends on what you have in your hands, are you going to create
a site from scratch or are you doing the whole Shalala, a logo for example
can take bloody ages to get right. I think it all boils down to the clients
expectations at the end of the day, if some bod wants a simple 10 page
static site and he hands me all images, logo etc then I wouldn't charge him
too much, but if the bloke wanted something designed beautifully like my
face then the price goes through the roof.

Good luck

Pablo

Then you should concede that your business plan is unworkable and bow out
early enough to pursue a different business.

Ha! I guess the goals are different when it's a full time job versus
freelance. I charge for freelance what I feel I'm worth and have been happy
so far.
