I'm wondering if there's any way to reduce the amount of time alotted to the
"waiting for server" dialogue during file transfer?

Select Passive mode in your Remote Site definition?
Loosen your Firewall restrictions?

Sorry I didn't specify.. my bad. Selecting the Passive Mode for the FTP...
we moved to new servers which was when this started cropping up more often
for all of my sites.
