BTW, if what I'm reading is correct, IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.de/)
will do pretty much what PicaView does, only it's free.

Hi Joe

Free is good. I will try it later.

I still have a problem understanding why, when a file is saved with a
different extension and therefore not *converted*, the file size is reduced.

I am going to have a look at the technical side of this because I guess you
have already explained it but I can't understand it.

Thanks for the chat Joe.

Terry

The file extension DOES NOT MATTER. What matters is what's going on
inside the file itself. As somebody or other has pointed out, if you
configure a webserver to recognize files with extension ".monkeybutt" as
text/html, then http://mysite.invalid/index.monkeybutt will serve as a
legitimate html file.

What is happening is that you app is resampling the image to reduce the
quality. Then it's saving the image with a .jpg extension, instead of
its original .jpeg extension. Try an experiment: take a .jpeg file you
have on hand. Rename it to whatever.jpg without doing anything else to
it. They go through the process you use to 'convert' the file.

Got it - at last. I'm sorry for being a bit brain dead today and thanks for
your patience.

I don't think you need permission somehow :-)

If you are happy with the quality I can optimise them all, if you are too
busy. It will make downloading much faster; especially on 56K dialup
modems, which are still very much in evidence over here.

Download speed is a pet thing for me...so anything that helps me create
faster-loading pages is greatly appreciated. And I know less about graphics
than I do about web design! :-)

I just relocated to a small town in Colorado (US) where the majority of
folks are on dial-up. so it's even more important now than before, because
any local business will want a site that downloads as fast as possible.

Thanks for all your help, Terry!

Lane
