Default Voice Browser plugin?? - 07-02-2004 , 07:13 AM

Bobby /W3 AAA - a new learning curve for me - and something that needs to
be addressed pronto as the new DDA legislation comes into force in the UK in
October.

W3 gives a pretty thorough explanation - however I can't find a 'voice
browser' plugin - anyone got any pointers?

TIA

Grant

What is a voice browser plugin?

There are aural browsers, and there are screen readers.

JAWS is perhaps the most popular screen reader. It reads the screen AFTER
the page is rendered, so it basically reads what a sighted person would
'see', and works mainly with IE (I think...). You can download a demo to use
from their site:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/

Auural browsers can actually read the markup prior to being rendered, and,
as such, are really a stand-alone browser. This page lists a few:

http://www.benmeadowcroft.com/upgrade/

Also, don't forget all of the other accessibility issues other than sight
impairment.

Darrel

Thanks very much for the pointers - this is new territory for me and I
haven't got the terminolgy right as yet!

One last question - are there any good validation tools around to check my
work such as the w3.org html validator ? (I looked but didn't see on there)

Kind regards

Grant

Stay with me on this one - I'm probably being stupid!

A tool to look at Accessability issues within a page - for me it would be an
extremely useful, such as the W3 html/xml validator

Ah...well BOBBY is often the most suggested one:

http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp

Do note that these types of validators can only validate the markup based on
the specs. That does not necessarily mean that the site is accessible. So,
do use something like Bobby, but do use yourself or other humans as testers
as well.

It's not really possible to check accessibility with a machine. There
are too many issues, some of them simply impossible to do for a machine.
You can at least check some basic issues with Bobby:

http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp

But most often it will complain about things you have to check manually.

Just what I was looking for - thank you both!

I think it correct to say that since Windows 2000 -- at least and
if not earlier -- Microsoft has included Narrator which is a screen
