W3 gives a pretty thorough explanation - however I can't find a 'voice browser' plugin - anyone got any pointers? What is a voice browser plugin? There are aural browsers, and there are screen readers. JAWS is perhaps the most popular screen reader. It reads the screen AFTER the page is rendered, so it basically reads what a sighted person would 'see', and works mainly with IE (I think...). You can download a demo to use from their site: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Auural browsers can actually read the markup prior to being rendered, and, as such, are really a stand-alone browser. This page lists a few: http://www.benmeadowcroft.com/upgrade/ Also, don't forget all of the other accessibility issues other than sight impairment. -Darrel |

One last question - are there any good validation tools around to check my work such as the w3.org html validator ? (I looked but didn't see on there) |

A tool to look at Accessability issues within a page - for me it would be an extremely useful, such as the W3 html/xml validator |

There are too many issues, some of them simply impossible to do for a machine. You can at least check some basic issues with Bobby: http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp But most often it will complain about things you have to check manually. |

I think it correct to say that since Windows 2000 -- at least and if not earlier -- Microsoft has included Narrator which is a screen reader with basic functionality. Start > Run > narrator |
