Default visitors still see my old web site after rebuilding it - 03-25-2009 , 03:42 PM

I just redid my site in flash (it was html only) and everyone is still seeing
the old site. I know it's a cache issue but is there any solution other than
somehow telling them to clear their cache??
I posted this in the flash forum and they suggested someone here can help if
it's an html issue.

Thanks!

Is there a link you could provide? Are you certain you replaced your old
default page with the new one (e.g. if old was named "index.html", did your new
one overwrite the old name?) Are you sure it's been uploaded to the server...?

The entire site in Flash? Why? That was a _really_ bad choice! Some
years ago Macromedia (the inventor of Flash!) made the same mistake -
some weeks later they reverted to the HTML version.

Flash-only is not going to work well in the Web!

And even if there's still mostly HTML with just some Flash elements
(like buttons), you should really reconsider this approach. Flash has
far too many drawbacks and causes a lot of problems. You might get some
nice graphical effects out of it, but you and your visitors will have to
pay a high price.

Where? Got a URL?

Not really. Do they get the new site after reloading (usually F5 or
ctrl-F5) in their browsers?

Argh I knew I was going to be asked that.. I can't post a url because it's sort
of a situation.
The default html file has been replaced (I double checked and it contains all
the new information and html code pointing to the main swf file).
The name has not changed though, it's still index.html. Would changing the
name to index.htm fix this??

All that you said, unfortunately it wasn't my choice.
Anyway, yes.. When cache is cleared the current (correct) site appears.

Thanks

Whomever made that choice is sitting on their brains. They have just made
the site a) inaccessable to those with any visual disabilities, b)
unspiderable to any search engine, and c) a general pain in the ass for
normal visitors. Depending on the mission and content of the site, item (a)
above *could* lead to legal action under section 508 of the Americans with
Disabilities act.

It would give you a 404 error message - file not found.

Just curious, how is that? Isn't this a default landing page name? index.htm?

Only if your server is configured to use index.htm as the default page.
You can set it with a .htaccess file if you host allows that, otherwise
its something you can do in your control panel if you have one.
