Default Very, very OT - but quite a problem for me. - 10-17-2003 , 11:30 PM

1. Went on a trip with my laptop and a copy of my site on a CD.
2. I copied the files onto my harddrive - thank heavens!!
3. Worked on site with the CD version. Dreamweaver MX 2004 crashed and
totally stripped the CD of everything except some autorun feature. (Windows
XP Home - SONY VAIO laptop)
4. Copied backup copy from harddrive back to a new CD and found that there
were at least 10 folders (for photogalleries) missing. They never got copied
from the move to the harddrive in the first place.
5. Ran thru the procedure again (found the missing folders on an earlier CD
backup)... putting the missing files on the CD in step 4.
6. Spent a lot of time updating my personal site
and the copied all this work from that CD back to the harddrive.
7. The same folders and files are missing again. They never made the move!!!

Any explanation??? I sure am glad I had backed up to my harddrive and also
that I had an old backup copy with me.

TIA, Eleanor

How could a DW crash delete stuff from the CD?

I have no idea, of course... but it happened. Probably it was a problem with
the CD drive in the laptop!

I am stilll having a hard time understanding - particularly if the drive in
the laptop isn't a CD-R/RW. 8)

That's exactly what the drive is. Most of the files are transferring just
fine. There are only about 6 that don't get copied properly.

Unless the CD itself has gone bad, I'm with Murray- there's really no way a
system crash could remove files from a CD unless the drive itself caused
physical damage to the CD's surface (the CDs we ship are read-only). Try
putting your CD in another machine and see if it reads correctly. If so,
your CD drives mechanism and/or drivers could be the suspect here.

Not sure what happened to your first CD, but I would suggest trying to
rescue the data from that one rather than using your old CD... Just a hunch
but it sounds to me like you have two things happening here, in any case I
would use this utility http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/ on the first
CD (the one that went fubar on the trip). If it restores the data I would
back it up on another CD for good measure.

Good Luck

Hey there, do you know of any similar programmes for floppy discs? Sorry to go OT here folks, but I've been looking for one for months!! Couldn't resist popping my question in!

Thanks in advance!

Just Google "data recovery", "floppy disks" or some combination thereof.

Here's a place to start:

http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/

Evaluation copy is available.

Cheers,
Sam
