Variable question

This might be very simple for some, but here it is anyways.

Using ASP/JS how do I set the value of a variable (I will use this variable
to pass it to Flash).

1. First case is if I use ASP/JS and the value of the variable is for
example = 'General'
2. Second case if the I use ASP'JS ans the value of the variable comes from
a recordset like Recordset("id")
3. Third option is same as # 1 just using ASP/VB
4. Fourth option is same as # 2 using ASP/VB

Thanks for the help. I would appreciate if you also include the <% when
needed.
