Default Using white text in a colored background: bad idea? - 01-01-2006 , 02:33 AM

I ask as I do not see it often.

I would like to use white text for my navigation bar. Why? I have spent many
hours experimenting with various color combos and white text on the background
color I want reads the easiest and looks the best....well, at least in my eyes.

Input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Why the doubt? What is the background color?

Should be OK if there's enough contrast to read the text clearly.

Search engines can still spider it. What they frown on is text and bg
colours being the same (i.e. intentionally hiding text).

Is this an accessibility question?

Are you creating an image or doing it via HTML/CSS?

I don't know - you never really told us why.

Take a gander and scroll through the boxes on the main page. It will give you
the white text of loads of different background colors:

HTH, take care.

Thanks guys and thanks also for the link. Excellent!

The reason I ask is that IE doesn't show certain colors on my computer. The
colored background disappears and the white text turns black. Not an issue for
me as I use Firefox as my primary browser. I thought that it could, perhaps, be
a problem for others if the background disapeared and the text didn't
automatically turn black.

John, the background color I'm eyeballing is 98ad82 via HTML.

If you're using a background image to create a background color do not
forget to declare a background color too. So if images do not load for any
reason, the text is still readable.

Then there's something wrong either with your IE or with your code.

It should be an issue because there's _definitely_ an error.

Exactly, so you have to find the reason and fix it.

Doesn't matter. Post a URL.

Are you sure that it's IE? I've never heard of this.

Have to see it in context. Post a URL if you have one.

I have a colorchart here - with white and black text on various colors...
may be of some help: http://www.dreamweaverresources.com/colorchart.htm

Nadia,

Thanks for the link!

For the others, yes, the color issue is in my IE. I noticed it last year right
after getting my new computer. None of the web pages I previously frequented
looked the same...as far as colors. I had a couple friends who are computer
geeks look it over and all they could come with was "there's a glitch...don't
worry about it, you should be using Firefox anyway". So, we loaded FF & bingo,
problem fixed.

I rarely use IE any more so never considered it an issue. It would be nice
however to be able to preview my Dreamweaver work CORRECTLY in IE.

I'm using Windows 2000 XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. IE version 6.02900.

Any ideas how I could get my IE working properly?

I take it you mean Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. IE version
6.02900.

Windows 2000 is a completely different product.

Short of reinstalling Windows, no.

The only thing I can think of is under Tools > Internet Options > General -
Accessibility. Are any of the boxes ticked there to override colors defined
in webpage?

Any chance of posting links to screenshots of a site in IE and FF so we can
see the difference?
