Default Using DW for ASP - 07-21-2004 , 09:24 AM

How good is DW ar genertating asp? I use (gasp) FrontPage and have a
functional database-driven site that I built with it.

But I want to move to a higher level of database interaction (ability
for users to login with their own personal password instead of a
one-password for all members, modify their own database records, maybe
even auto-generate an email to users based on a database date etc).

Do the DW server behaviors support this kind of capability (without my
having to code asp)? I have read where some FP users use DW for
generating ASP pages, and then just incorporate them into their FP webs.

Comments?

Thanks

Hi,

I've use DW for about 4 years with ASP which is tried and true. DW handles it
very nicely. Not having the same luck with PHP but hopefully things are
improving along that line. DW is hands down over Frontpage once you get past
the learning curve. It's actually set up in a much more logical fashion than
FP but it might take a while getting use to the different setup. Good luck.

DW is quite acceptible to me for most ASP code. I do hand code some things,
but not much....

I've been using Dreamweaver and/or UltraDev for ASP for several years now.
It works fabulously :-)

Best regards,
Chris

Either of you use it to do database connections?

I've used it for both Access and Mysql. dsn and dsnless connections. Works fine.

Yes and it's great. You'll also find the 'extensions' that you can download
(see exchange link on the Macromedia site here) are a real plus! For an
example you can view an ASP/MS Access site that I just put up at
http://www.GregsUsedCarsAndService.com

The random image on the first page is just java script but:

Go to the Quick List link to see a couple of the extensions at work.
You can sort the table by headers up/down order.
Ever other row can be a different color.
These are plug & play type extensions. Quite easy to insert and customize.

Go to the links page to see the 'Nested Repeat Region'. The links are pulled
from a database. Each category is only repeated once and then the links in
that category are listed. Really cool.

I have other sites that use the Pure ASP upload with the Smart Image
Processor. The site owner just fills in a form, click on an image to upload,
and the above uploads the image and resizes it to fit the area that you
reserved for it on the page. These are used with DWMX insert record behavior.

As you can see, using DW for it's built in database functions/behaviors is
only part of the fun. The extensions are really addictive and produce spiffy
looking pages. Just visit the extensions page and read about some of the things
they allow you to do. Have fun! Leesa

Well I have been using it for a few years and love it, but our server has
started to throw the old " . . . System resources exceeded . . ." error
about every 1.25 days. I am not absolutely certain it is the fault of the
ASP, but cannot say for sure.
It is getting to be a real super inconvenience to have to reboot and relog
the web server every day.
