Can you explicitly list the definition of your Remote site (you can omit the
password)?

I was having the same issue for a while...I checked everything...FTP connect
info, anything I could think of. I had a program that had a firewall in it,
and when I turned it off I could suddenly, Magicly connect. Firewall programs
are great...unless you're trying to connect to a remote site! lol Hence my
switch to a Router. But I digress.

If you are using a router, you don't really need a firewall, unless you want
to take the 'belt and bracers approach'.

You almost certainly need to set passive (PASV) mode in your FTP client
as the Firewall will prevent the FTP server from making the
back-connection that it requires in active mode.

That really does rather depend on whether the router itself is doing any
blocking of unwanted traffic or not or whether it is NATing the
addresses of the machines behind it - the purpose of a router is simply
to ensure that network traffic gets to the place where it wants to go
and that of a firewall to prevent traffic that you don't want to go some
place - these are entirely different things.

Aren't most routers NATing the addresses by default? Can you tell me any
that do not?

No, it is entirely a matter of the configuration and the application.
Traffic from my laptop here has to traverse at least 22 routers to get
to forums.macromedia.com - none of which appear to do any network
address translation whatsoever.

I'm sure you can find the websites of Cisco or Extreme or Jupiter or
Foundry or whatever yourself.
