Default is upgrade from MX to MX 2004 worthwhile? - 07-29-2004 , 10:20 PM

Hi all,

Budget is somewhat constrained and I cannot decide if MX 2004 is a need or a
want.
I could consult the DW upgrade info' but I'de rather hear from people in the
field, so to speak, no disrespect to DW intended.
What say 'yall? What have those who have upgraded from mx 6.something to mx
2004 found useful?
Tks,
Lossed

If you are into CSS layouts then MX04 is a must have, but if you do not then
you can stick with MX. I have both on my machine here and I still do a lot
of the work in MX.

The majority of my posts to the forum are CSS related as I struggle to get
my head around what browsers need what hacks to render what elements the way
I want 'em. So maybe MX 2004 is for me :-)

if do a search on css hacks roi and what you get is this......

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=css+hacks+roi&btnG=Search

near the top of the list are things like this....
... And FULL CSS has tons and tons of hacks and so-called work around just
to get it
to work right even in the latest browsers IE 6 and Netscape 7. And that's
not ...
http://tinyurl.com/4c3m7

seems like you are wasting your time to begin with and it only proves the
other side's point....CSS is totally mis-used, especially by lots of people
out there.....

Yeah, I kinda agree with that sentiment to a certain extent. There is
nothing so frustrating, I have found, than tweaking CSS and hacks for this
and that browser into the wee small hours and still finding limitations with
the 'results'. Also, I have found it better to use tables for server side
includes as allot of those are tabular in nature to begin with.
Also, i wonder, does W3C have any teeth to enforce standards on ANY browser
developers, let alone Microsoft? If the latter wants to come up with something not
standards compliant but a good feature the others don't have (and why
wouldn't they want to differentiate their product on features, rather than
lack thereof), what can W3C do about it? I don't know enough about it to be
sure but suspect we are never ever ever going to get all browsers to be
compliant to any one set of standards unless regulated (as dirty a word as
it sounds to some) in some way/shape/or form.
Until then, in my humble opinion, CSS is just another tool, which used well
in the right situation, is worthwhile, but it's not a fix all or wonder
tool, yet and it's been around a few years now. However, being reliant on
just one tool is not really an option at the mo'.

Agree with previous posts, if you want to completely control the layout of your page with CSS, i.e. no tables, then yes upgrade as MX doesn't display the layouts very well.

For me it was a matter of MX being so buggy that it was quite difficult to
use. MX 2004 hasn't had as many problems so I'm satisfied with it.

However, if you aren't having problems with MX... just stick with it, as
most likely in the next few months a new version of Dreamweaver will be
coming out, and you could upgrade then.

Since I first got DW 2, it seems that Macromedia has come out with a new
version of DW every 12-18 months. Since MX2004 has been out for about a year
already, I'd suggest that you wait, as the next version may come out pretty
soon. If it comes out within 30 days after you buy MX2004, then you'll
usually get a free upgrade.
BTW, there are no guaranteees. I am not an employee of Macromedia and I am
basing all of the above on observations I have made with previous versions.
Macromedia could very well handle the next upgrade completely differently.

I would strongly recommend downlaoding the trial before you make a purchase,
and see if it is right for you. That way, you buy in with some upfront
experience.

If by next few months you mean anytime from September to March, then you
could be right. This would fit within the 12-18 month release cycle. If
you mean anything other than this, then I think you are very wrong.

Be aware that I am not Macromedia, and I am only guessing based on previous
history (like middletree).
